adult dog training

I have found your book to be of great value as we have a six month old Boston terrier Puppy that has been "out of control" since the day that we brought him home.  After reading your book and applying your ideas on training, he has learned who is in charge and responds to our commands now.  Thank you so much for making our first year with Carter a success.

Before becoming a pet owner, some people will wonder about what is a good age for their new pet to be.  A lot of potential pet owners have the negative concept in their mind that it is impossible to teach an older dog anything new, which is entirely untrue.  In fact, Adult dogs are very trainable and are just much fun as puppies.  In some cases, adult dogs can be easier to train than puppies in the sense that you do not have to go through some of developmental problems associated with them being so young.  Nevertheless, regardless if you acquire a puppy or an adult dog, there will be training issues that need to be addressed in some shape or form.   So let us move on to how to go about training your adult dog.

I have an adult dog – what should I do to train him?
When bringing your new dog home you need to fall into the mindset that you are the king of the castle and never let the role switch to the dog.  Define from the start what the rules of the house are going to be and what acceptable behavior in your dog is.  Once you have defined the rules of the house and what type of behavior will be acceptable, do not deviate from the plan as it will confuse your pet and can lead to other training complications.

What should I not do with an adult dog?
You should never let the dog be in a position where he or she is mastering you into do something.  From the start, you need to instill in your dogs mind that you are the leader of the pack. Now this does not mean you cannot be affectionate or loving to your pet, but you do need to set boundaries for your dog to understand.  In your dog’s mind, he will see you as a pack mate; however, in every pack, a pecking order needs to be established to determine who will lead and how the pack will function.  You can easily establish the position as top dog by showing him or her that your needs always come first.  Here are some easy examples to assist you in training your adult dog.

    • When taking your pet outside for walk, entering a room, coming back home, etc.  Never let your dog enter before you.  You are the master and your needs comes first.
    • Only feed your pet after you.  Again this signals to your pet that your needs come first
    • Never allow your pet on your bed unless you welcome him or her to do so.  Your bed is where the King sleeps.  If you want your pet to be close to you, provide him or her with a crate or dog bed on the floor to lie on.
    • When your dog shows a desire to do something, you need to desensitize them by demanding they perform a function for you first.  A simple function can be the command for sit, which shows the dog who is in charge.

At first I was a little hesitant about reading your book on how to train my dog because I believed many aspects of training a dog were intuitive.   Upon reading your book, I found that my initial thoughts were unfounded and I learned many ideas and techniques to help me in my efforts to train my dog!  I would suggest purchasing this book to anyone trying to train their dog.   I just wanted to tell you how much your book has help me teach my dog some new tricks!
